GUAIFENESIN PROTOCOL
What is the Gauifenesin Protocol?
The Guaifenesin Protocol is a treatment for fibromyalgia tested by Dr. Paul St. Amand involving three aspects: titrating the dosage of extended release guaifenesin, clearing all products with salicylates as ingredients, and following the Hypoglycemic Diet for Fibromyagia if the patient is hypoglycemic.
How to Follow the Protocol
When starting on the protocol, many of us have many questions on how to follow it. Here are a few helpful hints, but also, find someone who will coach you through this process. I have several meetings where I am available in teaching and coaching you in the process. You may also set up an appointment with me to get started.
The first step to following the Guaifenesin Protocol is to get Dr. St. Amand’s book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia, and commit to the protocol. Whenever you get discouraged, remember that there is a support group ready and available for you to help you through this. As you are going through the book, you will also need to go through all your products in the house that have salicylates in the ingredients. It is imperative to the success of your healing that you dispose of all products with salicylates, including teas, herbal medicines and vitamins containing herbs.
The next step in the process is to get your body mapped. Mapping is the procedure of discovering where the phosphate deposits are around your body and are key to realizing the dose of Guaifenesin that is appropriate to your body. As the body clears, you will experience more symptoms at first, and then less. Then, when you are mapped again, some of the nodules should show that they are going away or getting smaller. If not, then your dose will be adjusted and you will check your body in another month. You will also want to start journaling your symptoms, starting with before the protocol, and every day thereafter. Having a list of your symptoms is also key to discovering if you are healing or not. You can write in a journal daily, or use a calendar with boxes and dates to take short quick notes. You will want to keep track of the food you eat, the activities you do, where you are experiencing pain, how often you feel fatigue and when, and any other symptom that you have that is disturbing your quality of life, such as IBS, or headaches.
The right kind of guaifenesin is also important to the success of the protocol. Fast acting guaifenesin(4-6 hrs), although less expensive, is not nearly as effective as long acting(12 hrs). The reason being, that when 4-6 hours hits, you are unaware of the guaifenesin fading and might forget to take the next dose. Before long, you are slave to taking the does four to six times a day and through the night. When you forget to take your dose, the kidneys stop ridding the body of excess phosphates, and the phosphates get redeposited somewhere in the body. You want to find long acting guaifenesin with no dyes or sugars or starches. Of all the available products, there is currently only one on the market that fits this description: Compounded Guaifenesin from Marina del Rey Pharmacy (www.fibropharmacy.com) capsules.
You will need to start with 300 mg twice a day, and if after a week you don't feel worse before feeling better, increase to 600 mg.
